Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) teachers in Kapsabet, Nandi county have staged protests decrying poor remuneration and delayed promotions.
They appealed to Governor Stephen Sang’ for urgent intervention, threatening to paralyze learning in all ECDE centers through a strike.
Speaking in Kapsabet town led by Mary Bett and Joyce Kemboi, the teachers lamented that other counties had already implemented the Scheme of Service as agreed by the Council of Governors.
“We have been employed by the county but we are serving under special salary. There is the Scheme of Service which is supposed to be implemented in all counties but our county is yet to hire us on permanent terms,” she lamented.
They said that the monthly salary of Ksh15,000 they have been receiving since 2018 was not commensurate to their workload.
“We have diploma, degree and certificate teachers. How come I am earning Ksh15,500 and my colleague somewhere else is earning Ksh37,000, Ksh40,000? Let us be paid equally,” noted Joyce Kemboi, another teacher.
They said that although many of them have progressed in their careers, no promotions had been carried out yet.
