After reclaiming their Nairobi region boys’ football title, Dagoretti High School have now set their eyes on the national trophy.
Dagoretti Mixed, Upper Hill, Lenana School, Ruthimitu Mixed, Soweto Academy, Highway, Olympic, and St Dorcus also sealed their tickets to this year’s Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association Term Two games set for Kakamega High School from August 8 to 12.
Dagoretti popularly known as Ditchez will be making their second appearance in the games having made their debut in 2019.
Wounded from last year’s semi-final exit, Dagoretti keenly exerted revenge on Highway Secondary School who eliminated them at the regional games.
Dismus Ongocho’s 22nd-minute goal was enough to secure their ticket to Kakamega where they are determined to improve on their 2019 second-place finish.
Dagoretti coach Joseph Makokha said that his boys were inspired by the desire to avenge last year’s loss.
“Last year’s loss was very painful because we lost our regional title and also failed to qualify for national games.
However, we left the championship keen to work on ourselves and I’m glad our efforts are bearing fruit,” Makokha said.
He, however, said that there is no time to celebrate and they will immediately embark on preparations for the national games.
Makokha who guided Upper Hill to national glory will be hoping to guide Dagoretti to their maiden trophy.
In the girls’ contest, Dagoretti Mixed retained their title after beating former champions and bitter rivals Olympic. Dagoretti thrashed Olympic 2-0 in a march that they dominated from the onset.
In volleyball, Ruthimitu Mixed and Soweto Academy retained their boys’ and girls’ titles respectively. Ruthmitu proved that last year’s victory was not a fluke by beating former champions Hospital Hill 3-1 (25-21, 26-28, 25-21, 25-19). Soweto extended their dominance with a 25-23, 25-17, and 25-13 straight sets will over Brown Hill.
Highway and Olympic were crown basketball 3×3 boys and girls champions while St Dorcus won the netball title. Upper Hill beat Lenana School 14-12 to bag the rugby sevens gong. Nairobi also selected composite tennis, table tennis, and badminton teams that will represent the region in Kakamega.
