Secondary school principals of Murang’a County have urged the government to dispatch capitation grants to their schools early enough to enable them to operate effectively.
During their KESSHA Annual Conference held at REEF Hotel in Mombasa, the chairperson Esther Wambugu complained that the capitation reach schools late, delaying or curtailing the implementation of school development projects.
She also asked the government to allocate adequate infrastructural development funds to enable students and teachers to work under conducive environments.
“Lack of essential physical learning facilities in schools has been identified as a major stumbling block towards offering quality education to students,” she stated.
Nonetheless, the principals were told to use what they have for the intended purposes only.
Speaking when she officially opened the conference, the County Director of Education (CDE) Annie Kiilu told the heads to ensure proper use of government capitation grants, reassuring that the government is aware of the challenges they are facing.
She urged them to prepare for the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) early enough to ensure proper delivery in their schools, further advising them to focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) towards the realization of the Vision 2030.
“You should also teach sports and performing arts in your schools,” she said.
Turning to discipline, Kiilu urged parents in the region to help teachers in instilling morals in children, blaming school unrest on lack of proper guidance.
