The Murang’a County Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) department is set to receive a substantial sum of Ksh. 100 million.
This move follows a motion by Gitugi MCA Edwin Wairagu, who advocated for an increase in the salary of ECDE teachers from the currenKsh15, 000 to Ksh25, 000.
Wairagu emphasized the dire situation faced by teachers, citing a lack of learning materials and inadequate furniture for the students.
While acknowledging the county’s infrastructural developments in ECDE centers, the assembly expressed regret over poorly constructed classrooms during the 2023/2024 financial year.
Kangari MCA Moses Mirara highlighted the teachers’ longstanding struggle with dilapidated centers, often dealing with leaking roofs.
He also noted that, despite the county’s distribution of porridge to 42,000 children in nine sub-counties, the teachers had been overlooked.
MCA Gladys Wambui advocated for the Ksh100 million allocation, envisioning a transformation that would enhance the early education experience.
Hannah Kamau, a nominated MCA and former ECDE teacher, emphasized the need for well-equipped centers and raised concerns about the unhygienic conditions of existing toilets.
The assembly collectively called for an improvement in infrastructure, ensuring a conducive learning environment for both teachers and learners.
