Mt Kenya East TVETs mark 100 years as torch reaches region

The TVET Torch is received to be relayed around the Mount Kenya East region.

TVETs in the six counties of Mount Kenya East recently marked 100 years of existence, with a rallying call for parents to enroll their children in the colleges.

Several principals from the institutions led by their chairman and Meru National Polytechnic Principal Mutembei Kigige said TVETs have the best facilities currently, encouraging young people to enroll and gain skills that give them automatic job opportunities in public and private sectors, as well as get into self-employment.

They said they unanimously welcome the CBA curriculum because it is tailor-made to fit the needs of TVETs, which gives priority to practicals as opposed to theory.

“We urge parents to enroll their children in TVETs because those who go through them never get stuck in job searches. TVET is the best route to follow. We are ready to welcome the CBC learners in TVET to enable them pursue their dreams. The current system of education is better than the previous one,” said Kigige.

TVET principals address participants in the TVET celebrations as they prepare for the torch relay.

Mount Kenya East is comprised of Meru, Isiolo, Samburu, Marsabit, Tharaka Nithi and Embu counties.

To mark the centenary, the regional chairman led members in picking the flame from Nanyuki before going round popularizing the TVET institutions in the region.

“We are celebrating TVETs’ 100 years of existence with the climax set to be held at Kabete National polytechnic where it will be graced by President Ruto. The flame was launched in Nyeri County,” he said.

Muraga TTI Principal Purity Murithi urged parents to enroll children in the institutions since they have all the courses they need.

“We have moved from theory based education where students only wrote notes, to practicals where they practically do what they learn. We want to rebrand TVET as the preferred way of study,” said Murithi.

Principals Eunice Njenga (Nkabune TTI), Lucy Anampiu (Mituungu), Flora Kanyua (Karumo TTI), Michael Maina (Mukiria TTI), Lucy Karuntimi (Samburu TTI) and Cecilia Mwongera (Kaelo TTI) were all present at the event.
