Mpesa Foundation has handed over refurbished facilities and new structures at Kametho Primary and Junior Secondary School in Rarieda Sub-county, Siaya, completed at a cost of Ksh35 million.
Through its Citizens of the Future programme, the foundation did a complete overhaul of the entire facilities at the school, which include renovation of six classrooms, construction of three classrooms for junior secondary, and refurbishment of the Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) centre in the school.
The facelift also saw the institution benefit from a complete new ICT and science laboratories in addition to a new school kitchen as well as ablution blocks and connectivity to water supply to improved sanitation.
Speaking during the official handover ceremony at the school, Deputy Chief of Staff in the Office of the President Eliud Owalo appreciated the Mpesa Foundation for the great gesture, noting that the facelift had made the school look great and is now one of the best in the region.

“This marks a great stride to the community around here since we now have the best facilities including ICT hub which will now help other schools in the area to also benefit from the hub including the community members,” stated Owalo.
Apart from Kametho Primary, Owalo is also ensuring similar refurbishment and facelift at Oboch Primary and Junior Secondary School.
Safaricom/ Mpesa Foundation Chairman Joseph Ogutu said the programme which was rolled out last year targets to impact at least 3 million learners through such initiatives by the year 2026.
“At Mpesa Foundation we believe in investing in our communities, and we have worked with various partners to impact millions of Kenyans across the country. To expand opportunities in education, our citizens of the future program will continue supporting schools across the country with infrastructure, focussing on the neediest cases,” said Ogutu.
He said that investments in these institutions have benefitted over a thousand students and teachers and created opportunities for hundreds of residents around the schools.
