MP to roll out funding model for needy students in Kwale

Matuga MP Kasim Tandaza addresses teachers at Kwale Cultural Centre on Friday, August 16, 2024.

Matuga MP Kasim Tandaza has announced plans to roll out an elaborate education funding programme for needy students in Kwale.

The programme dubbed ‘Elimu Na 10 bob’ will require a parent to pay Ksh10 daily for day schools and Ksh60 for children in boarding school.

Tandaza said that the new plan seeks to facilitate better planning and contributions towards the education of underprivileged students.

“With this programme, the CDF and county can allocate funds, while parents also play a role in supporting their children’s education, rather than relying solely on government and leaders to address everything,” he said.

Tandaza said the programme is expected to create a more sustainable and participatory model for educational funding, ensuring that resources are more effectively utilized to benefit students in need.

The MP stressed that the new model also aims to boost students’ engagement in their studies and improve overall academic performance.

He said that with the educational funding plan, no child will be sent home due to inability to pay school fees thus ensuring a fair learning environment for all students.

Tandaza lamented that insufficient funds have been a major factor contributing to poor academic performance.

The lawmaker said the programme is also designed to mitigate financial barriers to education, thereby fostering an inclusive and supportive academic atmosphere.

Tandaza said he has already engaged school heads and will be meeting with parents to ensure effective implementation of the proposed plan.

The MP added that children who dropped out of school over lack of fees now have the opportunity to pursue their dreams through newly launched technical and vocational training programmes being offered at Matuga Technical Training Institute including hospitality, beauty, cosmetology, plumbing and maritime affairs.

Tandaza also stated that he has urged teachers to extend their efforts beyond their regular duties to support students’ success in Matuga and beyond by providing free tuition and supporting parents in properly guiding their children.

He acknowledged the hardships teachers face but assured that, as a leader, he is working diligently to address some of their concerns.

The MP stated that he had made several efforts to push for the disbursement of teachers’ hardship allowances and will continue to follow up with the relevant committee.
