Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji has challenged TSC and the government to respect teachers’ labour rights by improving their wages and allowances as a way of rewarding their hard work.
Speaking soon after the Safaricom Foundation handed over sections of St Mary’s ACK Gatondo Primary School which were refurbished and expanded at a cost of Ksh10.6 million, Mukunji praised parents in Embu County for motivating and collaborating with teachers to improve education standards.
He said that while parents and guardians played a significantly positive role in supporting and motivating teachers, the government continues to frustrate them through poor wages not commensurate to the work they do.

This has resulted in low motivation, noting that despite the challenges teachers face, they have continued to satisfactorily impart the learners with requisite knowledge.
Mukunji thanked Safaricom Plc which through the foundation had gifted Manyatta Constituency one of the largest ever funding to an education institution and termed the improvements as a national milestone.
The MP advised the learners to work hard in their studies while being guided by discipline and respect toward teachers and parents. He added that the parents also have a role to play in ensuring that learners treat teachers with courtesy in a bid to fully benefit from their academic and social guidance.
He said learners should always approach issues with confidence because even when they achieve low grades in their tests, it does not mean that they would be failures in life.
He expressed his determination to ensure that all schools in Manyatta Constituency have infrastructure equal or closer to those offered in private academies because institutions with high class facilities perform well in their studies.
The MP said he had launched major campaigns to encourage the formation of alumni groups after realizing that such individuals contribute hugely to the success of school projects.
