Nandi Hills Member of Parliament Bernard Kitur has called on the government to increase funding to higher learning institutions in the country.
Kitur observed that the move will enable the institutions to run smoothly and tackle emerging financial needs with ease.
Speaking in the area, he stated that the cost of examinations, especially practicals, is high, a situation that has locked out many students.
“Examinations at institutions of higher education are expensive. I think as a government we need to look into it so that whatever we get on capitation and Higher Education Fund is sufficient to meet the cost of examination,” he noted.
According to him, it was disheartening for students to be in class only for them to miss exams for not meeting the required cost.
He stated the importance of the institutions, noting that underfunding has remained a major challenge in the institutions over the years.

MP Kitur also encouraged youths in the region to embrace online jobs, adding that funding is a serious matter and needs to be discussed and a lasting solution found.
“This is a challenge I am also facing in my institution for the students I have sponsored in my constituency. It is a serious conversation that needs to be brought to the table. No student should miss exams for not being able to meet exam costs,” added Kitur.
Pressure has been piling on the government to increase capitation and the Higher Education Fund, with reports indicating that thousands of students have deferred their exams for not meeting exam costs.
