Following the move by the government to implement the delocalisation of teachers’ policy, official data from the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has revealed Nairobi to be the most preferred region for teachers seeking transfers. Nyandarua and Kitui Counties became the most forsaken by teachers as many wanted to be transferred out of the regions.
Out of the 36, 277 teachers who applied for transfers nationally, tracing between November 1, 2022 to January 31, 2023; only 14, 733 have so far been approved while a sum of 21, 544 are still pending.
The transfer of teachers who were considered to have been in an institution for a longer period kicked off in 2018.
Mombasa and Kajiado counties also emerged among the hot favourites as in the case of Mombasa County a total of 499 transfer requests into the county were made against the 113 out of the county.
In Kajiado county, 723 transfer requests into the county for both Secondary and Primary teachers were made against the 528 who wanted out of the county.
At the same time, at the bottom three; Nyandarua County with just 194 teachers wanting in as a whopping 1,132 seeking transfer out, Kitui County has a total of 1,536 teachers asking for transfers in as 2, 289 seek for transfers out of the county. Lastly in Turkana County a sum of 398 teachers want out as only 84 teachers want transfers inside the county.
This data emerged due to response by the TSC to Embu Senator, Alexander Mundigi who had asked about the number of teachers transferred in and out of the county.
