Mortuary science applications overwhelm KMTC

The overwhelming number of applications for Mortuary Science in the just-concluded 2025 March intake has left the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) management facing challenges. Before the February 14th deadline, over 250 applications had been received, surpassing the intake capacity. Last year, Nairobi campus was only able to admit 50 students, and it was the only campus offering the course.

Dr. Oluoch, the CEO of KMTC, revealed that the demand for the course from the public is soaring, but the college’s capacity remains limited. To address this, the college has decided to introduce the course at both the Mombasa and Kisumu campuses.

The first cohort of graduands, who will be graduating this year, have already secured placements, with contracts and calling letters from interested facilities. One of the students shared their thoughts: “I feared working in the mortuary at first because I didn’t have the knowledge. But now, I am fully prepared. It is an essential service that must be dispensed.”

The days of mortuaries in the country lacking professionals with proper standards and management are coming to an end. In the past, working in a mortuary required a certain level of courage. To build that courage, some individuals resorted to alcohol and substance abuse. In some instances, hospitals even assigned mortuary duties to their employees as a form of discipline.
