More confusion as some JSS teachers claim their strike is still on

JSS teachers demonstrate to demand for better terms of employment. A section of their leadership has disowned a recent return-to-work formula, saying the strike is still on.

The Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers have thrown the country into confusion after a section disowned the return-to-work-formula signed with Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET).

In a statement released yesterday by Daniel Murithi and the spokesperson Omari Omari, the leaders said that KUPPET is not their employer and they cannot purport to sign any agreement with them, and that the union cannot also purport to withdraw the show-cause letters that were already challenged in court.

Terming those who signed the pact traitors, the teachers said the strike is still on.

The two, through their association the Kenya Junior School Teachers Association (KEJUSTA), in which Murithi is the Secretary General while Omari the spokesperson, maintain that their demands remain to be confirmation of 46,000 interns, and any agreement or deal must engage the right parties; that is, Teachers Service Commission (TSC) or Parliament through the Labour Committee.

Murithi claimed that KUPPET had offered them Ksh30,000 each to call off the strike, which they rejected as only TSC can give a solution that matches their demands.

Saying they were shocked to learn that their colleagues had met KUPPET and released a joint statement, they pointed out that any communication must pass through only them.

“Following the betrayal of moguls by a part of the leadership, the national leadership hereby calls upon moguls to ignore the shoddy papers written by unknown people herein referred to as betrayers and only accept communication through the Secretary General Daniel Murithi and the spokesperson Omari Omari,” said Murithi in the statement.

Murithi noted further that they have consulted their legal team and they maintain that going to school without any formal agreement is suicidal, urging all JSS teachers to wait for the planned meeting with the labour committee which will take place this week.

On Saturday, KUPPET signed a return-to-work-formula with a section of JSS leadership, and together they agreed to call off the strike which has gone on since reopening of schools in May.

The statement was signed by KUPPET Secretary General Akelo Misori, Organizing Secretary Paul Maingi and KUPPET Nairobi Branch Executive Secretary Moses Mbora. The teachers were represented by Edwin Osoro as Chairman, Edgar Murunga as Secretary General, and Patience Nkatha as Treasurer.
