University Academic Staff Union (UASU) Moi University chapter is up in arms after the university issued suspension and dismissal letters to union leaders over their strike.
In a press briefing on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, Busolo Egesa, the Chapter Secretary, expressed alarm over the administration’s issuance of the letters.
Egesa said that the drastic move will deepen the rift between management and staff, making it harder to address long-standing issues and delaying the resumption of learning in the public institutions.
A senior official from Kenya University Staff Union (KUSU) echoed Egesa’s concerns, stating that the publication of the letters has strengthened their resolve to defend their rights, with many frustrated over delayed salaries.
Egesa further disclosed that despite Parliament directing universities’ management to negotiate with staff, administrators have ignored the order.
