Moi University closed indefinitely after students strike over staff strike

Moi University has been closed indefinitely after students went on strike to protest their continued stay without classes due to ongoing lecturers' strike.

Moi University has been closed indefinitely following demonstrations by students over industrial action by the institution’s staff.

In a notice released on Thursday, Vice Chancellor Prof Isaac Kosgey stated that a Senate special meeting was held and resolved to suspend teaching and learning activities of the first semester of the 2024/2025 academic year.

All students in all campuses have been directed to vacate the university with immediate effect, including those staying in the university halls of residence.

The university directed international students to liaise with the Dean of Students for further direction, indicating that the university council and management are working to ensure that university operations resume as soon as possible.

The university workers have been on the streets for a month now, protesting against delayed salary payments, alleged payment of half salaries, and implementation of Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBA).

Their latest protest was on Wednesday, where lecturers protesting in the university demanded payment of their salaries.

Today morning, students who were protesting heading to Eldoret City were teargassed and forced to return. They were demanding that leaders intervene for the lecturers to resume work and continue with their studies.
