Mobile laboratories for schools have revolutionized the teaching of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects in Kenya.

The government, through School Equipment Production Unit (SEPU), came up with the idea of a mobile laboratory to promote learning of the STEM subjects.

The laboratory is among innovations showcased during the Kenya National Research Festival 2024 organized by Young Scientists of Kenya (YSK) and the National Research Fund (NRF).

Jane Mwai from Sales and Marketing department of SEPU said the laboratory, which uses solar power, is simple to maintain. It is fully-fitted with equipment needed in the laboratory.

The laboratory has equalized education in remote and urban areas. Students from the remote areas where there is no electricity are now competing with those in urban areas.

The laboratory, which was innovated before the introduction of CBC, has been of great help in its implementation.

Mwai said many schools have acquired the laboratory and this has increased students’ interest in STEM subjects. Some schools in Marsabit who received the equipment have won several awards nationally.

She said statistics indicate that  60 per cent  of learners from JSS will be taking STEM pathways  in Senior  School.

SEPU also displayed the Science kit that complements the mobile laboratory. The institution is mandated to design, manufacture, supply and distribute STEM materials and apparatus for educational institutions.

Kenya National Research Festival 2024 was held by National Research Fund to offer young budding scientists visibility and access to invaluable research resources.

Professor Ratemo Michieka, Chairman National Research Fund, said researchers have a duty to encourage young scientists to develop an interest in Science, study it and choose research and STEM careers.
