MMU students protest, disrupt transport along Magadi road

Police officers at MMU gate lobbing teargas to didperse students.

Police on Tuesday morning launched teargas to disperse Multimedia University of Kenya (MMU) students who took to the streets disrupting transport along Magadi Road.

The students blocked the busy Magadi road from 6:00 am forcing motorists to use alternative routes to get in and out of Ongata Rongai town, leading to a major traffic snarl up.

The students were protesting over lack of water in hostels and other facilities at the institution.

They also pointed out that the institution lacks a conducive learning environment due to inadequate learning materials, study equipment and internet services.

One of the students, James Kwak, said their calls to the administration to heed to their grievances have remained unanswered, forcing them to resort to the strike.

Tension is still high in the institution even after police managed to prevent the students from blocking the road.
