MMU students block Magadi Rd as protests over death of students continue

Chaos Erupts as Multimedia University students protest colleague’s death

Traffic along Magadi Road towards Rongai has been brought to a standstill today after Multimedia University students staged protests, blocking the road. The demonstrations were sparked by the tragic death of a fellow student who was involved in a road accident.

The students barricaded the road and clashed with police officers in running battles after protests erupted on Monday morning.

The deceased student, identified as Lameck Wambui Mwangi, was discovered dead on March 9, with authorities suspecting a hit-and-run incident along Magadi Road.

Mwangi, a second-year student in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Technology, was pursuing a Bachelor of Arts at the time of his passing.

His death was officially confirmed in a memo from Multimedia University’s Dean of Students, David Obonyo, who expressed regret over the tragic loss.

“We regret to announce the untimely demise of the late LAMECK MWANGI WAMBUI SST-261-115/2023, which occurred on Sunday, March 9, 2025, following a fatal road accident. The late Lameck was a second-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Technology,” Obonyo stated.

He further noted that Mwangi hailed from Mwea West District in Kirinyaga County and that funeral arrangements would be communicated later.

This protest mirrors a demonstration by Multimedia University students on September 17, 2024, when they took to the streets demanding better living conditions, including water restoration in their hostels.

Additionally, students voiced their frustration over delayed loan disbursements by the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).

During that protest, the National Police Service faced criticism for allegedly using excessive force against students. A widely circulated video showed officers in anti-riot gear cornering and assaulting a student with batons and blows.

Civil rights groups and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) condemned the incident, and investigations were launched. However, a report on the findings has yet to be released.
