Mount Kenya University’s (MKU) School of Law is set to launch a doctoral programme, expanding access to advanced legal studies locally.
According to Dr Hezekiel Oira, the School’s Dean, MKU will become the second private university in Kenya to offer a PhD in law.
“MKU will become the second private university in Kenya to offer this programme,” said Dr Oira. “It is an a la carte programme designed to meet diverse scholastic needs, styles and requirements – and is accessible in places and at a time individually chosen by learners.”
This initiative follows the positive reception of its Master of Laws (LLM) program, which employs a blended learning approach ideal for working professionals.

Dr Oira added that the LLM program, accredited by the Council of Legal Education in 2022, allows students to access curriculum content online at their convenience.
Weekly assessments ensure students grasp the material. Since its establishment in 2009, MKU School of Law has admitted over 2,500 degree and 1,600 diploma students.
Graduates like Dr Fredrick Otieno Aoko and Eunice Nyokabi emphasize how the school’s hands-on experiences and strong foundation in legal education have shaped their successful careers.
“MKU played a big role in every decision I made in my career. It sharpened my thinking and deepened my commitment to justice. It wasn’t just about learning the law; it was about understanding power and advocating for the vulnerable. It taught me resilience, discipline, and the power of using knowledge for impact,” said Nyokabi.
