Ministry instructs all children to be in school today after KNUT calls off strike

The Ministry of Education (MoE) has urged parents and guardians to ensure their children report to school for third term after the teachers strike was called off yesterday.

“We are most grateful to our teachers and their leaders for their selfless act of patriotism, which prioritizes the best interest of learners,” reads a press statement by Cabinet Secretary for Education Julius Migos. “In this regard, therefore, parents and guardians are advised to ensure that their children report to their respective schools for the third term, in accordance with the school calendar.”

In the press release, the CS promised that the ministry would work together with all stakeholders to address all unresolved issues and establish a more supportive and positive working environment for teachers.

“Through a consultative approach with all stakeholders, we will work together to achieve a satisfactory resolution of all outstanding matters to enhance a conducive and favourable working environment for our dedicated teachers,” the statement went on.

He mentioned that the ministry has already allocated Ksh21.8 billion in capitation to all basic institutions to facilitate the smooth resumption of school operations.

“As earlier notified, the Ministry has already disbursed KSh21.8 as capitation to all basic education institutions, to facilitate a seamless resumption of school operations,” further reads the statement, assuring teachers that the government is committed to addressing their concerns despite the fiscal constraints the country faces.

He noted that following discussions between the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and the unions, the government has allocated resources for implementing the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and for retooling teachers to support the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

“Following talks between the Teachers Service Commission and the unions, the government has, for instance, provided resources for the implementation of the 2nd phase of the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement, with effect from 1st July, 2024. The government has also provided resources for retooling teachers for the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum,” it said.
