The Ministry of Education has earmarked a number of schools in Kisii county during a safety assessment exercise ahead of school reopening in January 2025, adding to the 348 schools that were shut down early this week.
The inspection of school buildings is part of the assessment exercise by the Ministry of Education to minimize potential risks that may cause accidents in schools.
The schools’ structures were found to have collapsed toilets, condemned structures and ongoing constructions that do not follow safety rules.
Speaking after a week-long assessment the County Director of Education (CDE) Philip Chirchir noted that there is urgent need to secure the safety of all learners.
Chirchir said the condemned structures will be brought down, while excavated sites will be fenced and filled to prevent calamities.
“We have seen several structures that are below safety standards. In this regard I request all school stakeholders to immediately embark on enhancing safety before January,” he said.
Chirchir called on school heads to cooperate with required agencies to ensure a smooth inspection exercise.
Director Martha Ekirapa ordered for backfilling of two excavated sites in Marani sub-county after learning of a case where two Pre-primary pupils were rescued after falling into an unsecured pit latrine.
In Nyamache sub-county, the team discovered that most schools were constructed on swampy lands and a number of sanitation facilities have collapsed.
