Residents of Kuria West in Migori County have thanked President William Ruto for ordering schools to remain closed because of the ongoing countrywide floods.
They said this will allow parents to recover from the losses and shock caused by the floods in some parts of the country as they monitor the safety of their children.
“The lives of our children are more valuable than education,” said one John Mwita.
Another resident Wilson Nyamohanga said that the president is a parent and a human being, and so the step he took could be taken by any other parent to keep their children safe.
The residents who spoke to Education News in Isebania town said that majority of them had lost a lot of property as roofs of shops and housed collapsed.
They appealed to the government to send relief like foodstuff, books and bedding to help them cope with the situation as they start life a fresh.
The mournful residents accused are MP Mathias Robi of laxity as he ignored calls to unblock feeder roads connecting Mali Ngumu Estate and Hotel Border Point along the highway to the town centre.
Chacha Mogesi wondered why other parts of the country got quicker responses from the government when misfortune fell.
“We are also Kenyans although we are at the border. We deserve equitable services like the rest of the citizens,” he said.
