It was all song, dance and smiles after 180 needy students in Meru county got full sponsorship to pursue their secondary education courtesy of Kamashinani Foundation initiative.
The celebrations erupted moments after Meru senator and the Senate deputy Speaker Kathuri Murungi promised to sponsor 180 needy students with school fees through his foundation until they complete their secondary education.
Senator Murungi is the patron of Kamashinani Foundation that sponsored the students through Inua Masomo initiative. He said he decided to sponsor the students after several parents approached him and appealed for his support to their children pursue secondary education. He spoke yesterday at his office in Meru where he met the students, guardians and their parents who mostly are high school students.
“I will continue sponsoring the students even after they have completed their high school to ensure they fulfil their dreams” Murungi said.
The senator said he decided to lobby for funds to assist the needy students. “I have been sourcing for funds from my friends and part of my salary to ensure I keep the students in school,” said the Senator. He urged students to work hard and excel in their education. Murungi said he pays the fees for the whole year to ensure the students don’t miss any lesson after being sent away.
On Meru politics he said he has ensured that Meru gets huge allocation from the national government. Donmark Mutethia and Mark Kaithia, the beneficiaries lauded the Senator for his kind and humane gesture saying they will forever be greatful to him. Apart from assisting needy students with fees the foundation also offers mentorship programs.
Meru county deputy governor Isaac Mutuma lauded the move by the Senator for coming up with the education sponsorship through Kamashinani foundation noting that the initiative will assist venerable pupils and students get education.

He said education was the equalizer regardless of the humble background one has come from. Mutuma said that the high rate of teenage pregnancy being experienced in Meru county and the youth engaging in drugs and substance abuse and alcoholism can be dealt with if the pupils and students can be able to access education rather than staying idle.
Timothy Mayabi the country director for Tegemeza society organization Canada urged the pupils and students to work hard on their education and also called on the parents to support their children.
He said as Tegemeza society organization Canada they will continue supporting Kamashinani foundation through senator Kathuri Murungi so that the foundation can assist more pupils and students access education.
