Masige East Member of County Assembly (MCA) Michael Motume has urged schools, residents and the education sector to to take lead in climate change mitigation activities

He said more trees should be planted to mitigate the climate change crisis.

Motume asked the schools management boards and people in Kisii County to take lead in environmental conservation activities.

The MCA urged residents to avoid planting the eucalyptus trees along river banks and replace them with indigenous trees that are environment-friendly.

“I want to you to kindle this new ember of conserving and preserving the environment from Masige ward and the whole process will spread to the whole County.” He said.

Motume was addressing parents and teachers of Irongo Primary School when he delivered a water tank for the school on Friday.

He advised the School committees to use modern tanks to harvest water in their school to avoid sending children to the river at the expense of their studies.

The MCA thanked the parents for earmarking a space in the school for planting trees that will involve pupils as the main agents of environmental conservation focused on increasing the forest cover in the country.

“My office will support education and its related activities like involvement in environmental conservation. “He said.

He said his office will provide 500 seedlings to be planted at Irongo Primary Schools when schools reopen.

He hailed the recent announcement of the Kisii County Woman Representative Doris Aburi to build boreholes in the 45 wards to help schools that do not have access to piped water.

The MCA who was accompanied by area chiefs also launched a local library by providing a modern cupboard and books shelf for the safety of books donated by well-wishers.

He promised that his office will construct new classrooms for ECDE pupils in his ward.
