Kisii County Commissioner Joseph Kibet has asked Chiefs and their assistants to tighten security towards the protection and safeguarding of the girl child.

He decried the high rate of child defilement in the area and attributed it to general societal moral decadence.

“I don’t see much logic in the Chiefs arresting an old man found in possession of illicit brew and arraigning him in court when adults prey on our innocent minor girls and are left to wander freely in society,” he observed.

The county boss was reacting to a recent incident where a middle-aged man was imprisoned over child defilement.

The court in Etago found Wilfred Ombasa of Nyabiosi village in South Mugirango guilty of ambushing his niece and defiling her several times.

Before Etago Law Court magistrate Vincent Ombogo, the accused admitted to having committed the offense and pleaded for leniency.

However, in his ruling, the Magistrate found him guilty of defiling a close relative and minor, 14, and sentenced him to 40 years in prison.

“I find this crime to be abnormal and heinous and I have reason to send the accused behind bars as a lesson on human sacredness and for others to learn from the severe correctional punishment,” said the magistrate.

The accused was, however, given 14 days to appeal against the judgment.

The severe sentence against child defilement comes three months in the same court after another middle-aged man from Bosaga village in Getenga location was sentenced to 50 years of imprisonment after the court found him guilty of incest as he defiled his Grade 4 daughter.
