Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) in Machakos County have lauded Governor Wavinya Ndeti for her commitment to inclusivity after their participation in the recently concluded East Africa Local Authority Sports and Cultural Association (EALASCA) Games in Kampala, Uganda.
Kenya emerged as the overall winner in the competition, marking a historic moment for Machakos PWDs, who competed internationally for the first time.
After years of exclusion, Governor Wavinya initiated an affirmative action plan to ensure PWDs were included in various indoor and outdoor competitions.
While flagging off Team Machakos, she reaffirmed her government’s dedication to policies that promote equity and inclusion for PWDs in all county programs, as mandated by law.

“By creating these opportunities, we are not doing PWDs a favor. My government will ensure they enjoy all privileges equitably because they are not disabled but abled differently,” said Governor Wavinya.
Faith Muendo, a village administrator in Ikombe Ward, Yatta Sub-county, who lives with albinism, expressed her gratitude for the chance to participate in the EALASCA Games in Kampala.
“I am grateful to the county government for recognizing and restoring dignity to PWDs. We feel valued and urge other institutions to follow Machakos’ example,” said Faith, who competed in the shot put.
Jackline Mauta, a breast cancer survivor who became a Paralympian after treatment, echoed similar sentiments.
“It feels great to represent my county and country beyond our borders. We appreciate the PWD committee in the county for advocating for our rights,” said Jackline.
Rhoda Mueke Mutua, a PWD from Matungulu, said it’s time for PWD to rise and fight for their rights and dreams.
Machakos County Sports Director one Ituo revealed plans to establish exclusive PWD teams to represent the county in future tournaments.
“We are collaborating with partners and coaches to build strong teams in various disciplines, ensuring that PWDs are fully integrated into our sports programmes,” he said.
Governor Wavinya’s initiative marks a significant step toward inclusivity in sports, offering PWDs a platform to showcase their talents nationally and internationally.
