The County Government of Machakos will embark on inspection of schools inside its boundaries to ensure they are compliant with fire safety regulations.
This was said by Governor Wavinya Ndeti yesterday at a mass at the Machakos Town Catholic Cathedral, pointing out that their aim is to guarantee safety of students in light of the recent fire incidents in several schools across the county.
“The concerned county department will now inspect all schools to ensure they comply with fire safety regulations. The schools should have fire extinguishers and buckets that can be used to put out fire in case there is an incident,” she said.
At the same time, she urged parents to be firm on their children so as to curb escalating cases of indiscipline and burning of schools.
The governor said it was unfortunate that cases of arson in schools were on the rise, causing parents to incur heavy costs in rebuilding the schools.

Machakos County schools have in the recent past experienced unrests, with Mumbuni Boys High School and Katoloni Secondary being some of those affected by fire incidents.
Flanked by members of her executive, the governor said although corporal punishment had been banned in schools, it was important for parents not to ‘spare the rod’ in instilling discipline in their children.
“I am saddened by the increasing incidents of burning of schools. I ask our children to stop the destruction and also urge our parents to be firm on their children. It’s about carrot and stick. It cannot be carrot carrot always,” said Ndeti.
