Police in Lugari are in pursuit of a suspect who physically assaulted a Form 3 student while on her way to school.
According to Cyrus Mavisi, a bodaboda rider who rushed her to the hospital, it was around 5:20am when he heard screams and upon arriving at the scene, he found the 19-year old Holy Family Secondary School student lying on the ground crying in pain.
“When I heard the screams, I headed towards the direction to find out what was going on. When I arrived, someone ran past me and disappeared in a maize plantation beside the road. Two other young men had also arrived, one of whom identified the suspect,” he said.
The victim’s father, Enock Amunga, said that her daughter was hit on the head, shoulder and right arm with a club (rungu) by the man who wanted to rape her.
“Her clothes were full of blood, when I arrived at the hospital. I thought she had passed away. I thank God that she’s fine,” he said.
The incident, which occurred at Kona Mbaya village, Lugari constituency, was reported at Chekalini Police Station.
Joel Nganasa, a teacher from the school, said that the girl is in stable condition and they will support the police to ensure the suspect is brought to book.
