Lugango Secondary School in Kakamega East is celebrating a milestone driven by improved exam results despite significant challenges.
The remotely placed day school is celebrating three students who got direct entry to the university.
Principal Herman Witaba Ingosi reported a mean grade increase from 2.9 in 2023 to 3.9 in 2024, with no failing grades this year.
Lugango lacks basic facilities, such as classrooms, an administration block, a laboratory, and a dining hall among other essential amenities.
The school utilizes some of the adjacent Friends Church facilities such as the Sunday school hall for its operations.

Despite these challenges, students excelled, scoring A’s in Chemistry and Biology and a C+ in Physics, highlighting their determination to learn.
Most students come from the local community, often living with poor guardians who struggle to provide meals.
The school relies on minimal fees and well-wishers for support.
Ingosi noted efforts to build classrooms but urged parents to take responsibility for their children’s education, instead of leaving it to elderly guardians.
He called on nearby primary schools to send students to Lugango Secondary School, boosting funding and growth potential.
The Principal believes the school can reach a mean grade of 4.5 this year, urging stakeholders to support its development.
He acknowledged the impact of local economic issues, including the boda boda industry and gold mining, on student performance but praised his staff for counselling students against such distractions.
Other schools, including Solyo and Museno, also reported good results, but efforts to reach their principals were unsuccessful.
