Little known school to get bus for trouncing big boys in KCSE

Gatundu North MP Julius Kururia is carried shoulder high by parents as they appreciate him for the good work he is doing to uplift education in the constituency.

Little known Mutuma Secondary School in Gatundu North Constituency, Kiambu County, has been promised a 62-seater bus by area MP after it trounced several big schools in the region in the 2023 KCSE.

The feat saw the school take over 20 students to university.

It is not the only small school though to have tasted the sweetness of dislodging the erstwhile academic giants after registering splendid performances.

According to parents, improved educational facilities such as enough and good classrooms, quality teachers, laboratories, and lavatories among other factors informed the quality grades.

The bursaries were another motivating factor that enabled the learners to remain in class uninterrupted.

Led by Beth Nyambura and Gabriel Waciuri, the parents who spoke when area MP Elijah Njoroge Kururia toured the best performing schools called for improvement of education standards in public schools.

Also awarded was St Francis Mang’u Girls High School, an extra-county school within the constituency which regained its glory after more than 250 of its KCSE candidates scored university grades.

According to the school principal Alice Mbugua, the institution has been on a rising trajectory having improved in the last two years and hopes to upgrade to a mean score of 9.0 in this year’s exam.

The best candidate scored an A Plain, 13 candidates scored A- minus, 45 had B+ while 191 others managed to score between B- and C+.

Meanwhile, Kururia lauded the government for having released Ksh10 billion to NG-CDF, which he said will go a long way in enhancing education activities.

The money, he said, will help children from needy backgrounds receive bursaries to facilitate their retention in school, as well as fund other activities that are geared towards quality learning.

While schools reopened on Monday for the start of this year’s academic calendar, needy parents have been struggling to take their children to school, prompting the MPs from both sides of the political divide to demand the release of Ksh63 billion.
