Little-known Namawanga Girls’ High School has etched its name in the annals of history after its hockey team secured a maiden qualification for the regional championships. The Webuye West-based side put on a stellar performance in the county competitions, finishing second behind the 2019 Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) national champions, St. Cecilia Girls Misikhu.
This remarkable feat marks a turning point for the school’s sports program, with Principal Jane Owuor becoming the first head of Namawanga Girls to lead the institution’s hockey team beyond the county level.
The team’s rise has been fueled by a blend of raw talent, tactical discipline, and sheer determination—traits that have seen them break barriers and announce their presence in the competitive school hockey scene. With the regional championships on the horizon, the team is expected to intensify preparations as they aim to make an impact beyond their newfound status.
