The late Prof Bethwel Ogot

Governor Nyong’o has joined leaders and the academic fraternity to pay tribute to the legendary Professor Bethwell Allan Ogot.

Kenya and the entire academic community are mourning the loss of Professor Ogot, a towering figure in African history and Kenya’s first Professor of History.

Dr. Owen McOnyango, Communications Director at Maseno University, confirmed his passing and stated that the family would share more details.

Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong’o expressed profound sadness over the loss of such an eminent scholar.

He highlighted Prof. Ogot’s significant contributions to African history and research methods, noting that his influence reached far beyond Kenya.

Nyong’o remarked that Ogot’s legacy includes the establishment of vital institutions, such as the Institute of Development Studies and the Institute of African Studies, which emerged during a time when such disciplines faced skepticism.

The governor recalled Ogot’s tenure at the University of Nairobi, where as Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academics and Dean of the School of Arts and Social Sciences, he achieved remarkable advancements in academia.

Globally, Ogot was recognized as the President of the International Scientific Committee for UNESCO’s General History of Africa, contributing to a comprehensive narrative of African history.

Nyong’o reminisced about Ogot’s collaborations with other scholars, such as Profs. David Some and Mibey, in founding various Kenyan universities, profoundly impacting countless students’ lives.

He also highlighted Ogot’s role in the East African Legislative Assembly, emphasizing his dedication to representing Kenya.

Ogot’s literary contributions will continue to inspire future generations, with his many publications serving as a cornerstone for intellectual discourse and African independence.

Nyong’o recalled a recent visit to Ogot’s home in Yala, where they discussed the current state of Kenyan academia and the persistent challenges of underdevelopment.

During that visit, Ogot surprised him by gifting his latest publications, “Dictionary of Dho-Luo” and “Odera Akang’o,” which Nyong’o insisted on purchasing out of respect for Ogot’s intellectual labor.

A few months ago, Ogot was honored by the African Higher Education Research Institute (AHERI) for his extraordinary work in promoting African history and archaeology.

His son, Madara Ogot, accepted the award on his behalf during a conference in Kisumu, attended by esteemed colleagues and students who benefited from Ogot’s mentorship.

Born in 1929 in Gem, Siaya County, Professor Ogot’s academic journey began at Ambira High School and continued through prestigious institutions, including Makerere University and the University of London.

He played a pivotal role in Kenya’s independence, assisting nationalists during critical negotiations.

illustrious career

Ogot’s illustrious career included serving in various academic roles at multiple universities, culminating as Chancellor of Moi University until 2013.

He remains a Professor Emeritus at Maseno University, where his teaching has shaped the careers of many scholars.

In his autobiography, “My Footprints on the Sands of Time,” Ogot reflects on his storied career and the evolution of African history.

Despite the challenges he faced, including being dismissed by former President Daniel Moi in a public announcement, Ogot’s passion for education has never waned.

His wife, Emily Grace Akinyi, a politician and health specialist, passed away in 2015.

Now 94, Professor Ogot enjoys his twilight years in Yala, leaving behind a rich legacy of knowledge that will resonate for generations to come.
