In a show of solidarity and humanity, students at Meru University of Science and Technology contributed Sh20 000 through a WhatsApp group for Mary Mukiri, whose shop was robbed by suspected goons who took advantage during riots of university students last week at Kaithe market in Imenti North.
Led by the University Students’ leader Patrick Mwaka, the students pleaded with the woman to pardon them for destroying her property and accept their apology even though the property destroyed was worth more than Sh20,000 and had been only her source of livelihood.
They promised that it would not happen again, adding that their action was due to anger after one of their students was stabbed and killed by unknown individuals who escaped using a motorcycle.

For her part, Mukiri said she has forgiven the students and will continue supporting them, even as vendors from Kaithe market urged peaceful collaboration between the students, locals, and businesspeople.
A Section of the Meru Council of Elders has also pleaded with local leaders and security agencies to foster security in the area around Meru University.
Led by the chairman, Mugambi Aruyaru, the elders raised concerns over the goons who have ganged up at the Kaithe area in Tigania West and robbed students of their valuables on their way to school.
They have also cited a few rape cases of female students at Meru University, and the elders have called for security to be beefed up in the area.
