Kotetni Comprehensive School in Kisumu West Sub-county is in dire need of new toilets four months after sub county public health authorities served it with a notice to close the school if the Board of Management fails to act on the directive.

According to a spot check by Education News at the learning institution on Friday 10 January, the situation has become even more worse as no action has been taken ever since and some of the toilets have sunk with some showing cracks that pose a big danger to the students visiting the toilets to answer to the call of nature.

New toilets

During last year’s World Toilets Day celebrations that were held at the same school, the head teacher James Kowino appealed to well-wishers especially Kisumu West NG-CDF committee to consider helping the learning institution to construct new toilets in good time so as to save it from being shut down by the public health authorities.

“The department of public health had issued us with a notice requiring the school Board of management (BoM) to put up new toilet facilities before the schools reopen this year or else the be closed, but we are short of funds, so we are appealing for assistance,” he was quoted saying.

These toilets are filled.

Efforts to get comments from the school BoM chairman over the matter flopped as none of the teachers was willing to provide his mobile phone contact without his consent.

However, contacted for comment on the issue through his mobile phone, the institution head confirmed that the area MP Rosa Buyu had promised to convene an emergency meeting with her NG-CDF committee any time last week with an aim of finding a way-forward over the matter.

However, some of the parents who spoke to Education News on condition of anonymity urged the school BoM and the head teacher to move with speed and present the matter to area MP and her NG-CDF committee for urgent action or else the school will end up being closed down with the learners facing the consequences.

Most parents however lauded the Ministry of Education for constructing two Grade 9 classes at the school which are in the final stages of completion.

“The Ministry of Education has done a good job by putting up two Grade 9 classes here, but we’re urging area MP Rosa Buyu to officially open the three new classes that had been constructed by Kisumu West NG-CDF to accommodate more students,” said Eunice Adhiambo, a parent.
