Kwale affirms prioritization of education for persons with disabilities

Kwale Governor Fatuma Achani has reiterated her administration’s commitment to championing the welfare of Persons living With Disabilities (PWDs) by prioritizing their education and socio-economic well-being.

Speaking during a community event, Governor Achani said that her government recognizes the invaluable contributions of PWDs and is actively working to create a more inclusive society.

She revealed that the county government has implemented significant initiatives to ensure PWDs’ access quality education including providing scholarships and bursaries to students with disabilities.

“We believe education is the cornerstone of empowerment, and we are dedicated to ensuring that no one is left behind due to physical or intellectual challenges,” she said.

Achani said that her administration is focused on creating employment opportunities for vulnerable communities within county departments to foster inclusivity.

She said the county aims to tap into their unique talents and skills while promoting financial independence among the often-marginalized group.

The Governor said that affirmative action programs have been rolled out to ensure they receive fair representation in county jobs and tenders.

She added that her administration is conducting regular sensitization programmes to reduce stigma and discrimination against PWDs.

The county boss said that through partnerships with civil society organizations and other stakeholders, the county is fostering awareness campaigns aimed at promoting a better understanding of disability issues.

She also said that her administration is also working on infrastructure projects to ensure public facilities are accessible to all, including ramps and elevators for those with mobility challenges.

Achani disclosed that specialized medical camps for PWDs have been organized to provide services such as physiotherapy, orthopedic support, and early diagnosis of conditions that may lead to disability.

She further pledged to strengthen partnerships with national government agencies and international donors to secure more resources for programs targeting PWDs.

“Our goal is to create a society where everyone, regardless of their abilities, can realize their full potential and contribute to the growth of our county,” she said.

This year’s theme was dubbed “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future”.
