KUPPET wins union of the year award at NCCI gala

KUPPET Vihiga ledership led by Executive Secretary Sabala Inyeni receiving the award yesterday.

Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Vihiga branch has clinched the Trade Union of the Year Award.

The branch was awarded for being the most vocal and visible union in both print and electronic media while advancing the interests of its members.

The branch’s leadership was also credited with initiating several welfare programs for its members.

The award was received by the branch Executive Secretary Sabala Inyeni from the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Commerce Trade and Cooperatives Joseph Lunani in a glamorous ceremony held at Sosa Cottages in Mbale yesterday evening.

The event, organized by National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) Vihiga Chapter, was also graced by Vihiga county Governor Dr. Wilber Ottichilo.

Speaking after receiving the award, Sabala encouraged teachers in the county to formally register their side hustles to take advantage of available business opportunities.

The union boss has been vocal in advancing teachers’ welfare. At one point, he was struck from the union’s payroll together with other branch officials for publicly opposing the controversial Teacher Professional Development (TPD).

Sabala is also among branch officials who have publicly expressed interest in running for one of the top seats in the union’s National Executive Board (NEB) in the 2026 national elections.
