The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) now wants the Teachers Service Commission TSC) to ensure teachers have easy access to counselling services amid mental health concerns among them.
Kericho branch Executive Secretary Mary Rotich said the rising cases of mental health problems is worrying, hence the need for action.
Rotich rooted for the establishment of awareness programmes, saying although mental health is covered by Aon Minet, more needs to be done.
“Mental health problems have become an issue now. As a union, we want TSC to take measures aimed at enabling teachers have an easy access to cancelling services,” she stated.
Speaking in Kericho town, she decried the shortage of psychiatrists and other mental experts, a situation she said has affected delivery of health services.
Rotich highlighted the causes and signs of depression, appealing for the empowerment of Aon Minet-accredited facilities across the country for teachers to have easy access to quality services.
“Gambling, family issues and some other challenges have led to depression among teachers. When you see any one isolating themselves, please talk to them. We also appeal for the empowerment of facilities accredited by Aon Minet so that many teachers can get services with ease,” added Rotich.
The union also appealed for frequent mental examination, adding that mental patients need care and support.
Over 7 teachers have committed suicide in the county since the beginning of the year, while several others are recuperating in various health facilities due to the problem.
