As candidates prepare for national examinations, the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) wants security beefed up in Kerio Valley.

Branch Executive Secretary Paul Biwott said insecurity has greatly and frequently disrupted learning for long in the area hence the need for prompt action.

Addressing the press, he suggested that schools be manned by police so as to prevent attacks.

“We thank the government for beefing up security in this region. However, we want schools manned by police in order to ensure candidates prepare well for exams,” he noted.

Biwott also wants schools rebuilt, adding that students from the area should be provided ample learning environment like their colleagues elsewhere in the country.

“Many schools along the Kerio Valley belt were vandalized by bandits. Some institutions have remained closed for many years. As a union, we therefore appeal to the government to speed up the reconstruction and reopening of the affected schools for the benefit of our children,” added Biwott.

Professionals from the Kerio Valley of Elgeyo Marakwet have also expressed outrage over the increasing cases of insecurity in the area, with over 50 schools being affected. Local leaders have been appealing for decisive action to curb the vice.

Governor Wesley Rotich warned against politicizing the matter, adding that criminals in the area have been emboldened as none of them has been apprehended despite the ongoing security operation in the area.
