Erastus Kimetu (Brigadier), the Chairman of the Makueni County Kenya Union of Primary Teachers (KUPPET), has assured members that the union is working towards a favourable Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) to address the rising cost of living.
He highlighted the unique challenges teachers face compared to other job groups, like civil servants.
Speaking after the Makueni County Term One Secondary School Games held at Matiliku Boys’ High School, Kimetu encouraged union members to remain patient as efforts are being made to ensure the situation is well managed.

On Wednesday, Charles Nyakundi, the Makueni County Director of Education, officially opened the games, which were then officially closed by Mercy Gitari, the Sub-County Quality Assurance Director for Nzaui.
During his address, Kimetu urged the County Director of Education (CDE) to ensure that referees’ allowances were paid on time and increased.
“I must commend the organizing committee for its excellent work,” Kimetu said. “While applauding the teachers for their support, I also encourage the committee to consider appointing scouts.”
Kimetu also questioned why the ten sub-counties could not finance two composite teams for regional competitions, emphasizing that this initiative would motivate players and coaches.
Kimetu thanked all students who took part in the various games and asked every student to engage in co-curricular activities.
“As teachers, we are committed to nurturing these talents,” Kimetu said. “Talent is highly valued nowadays and can offer greater exposure and opportunities.”
