KUPPET leaders urge parents to support teachers’ strike

KUPPET Trans Nzoia branch vice chairperson Mark Tum and Assistant Executive Secretary Martin Wafula address mourners.

KUPPET Trans Nzoia branch is calling on parents to rally behind their ongoing strike, in order to pressure the government to fulfill its pledges to teachers.

The plea was made during a burial ceremony for the late Beatrice Shikanga, a retired teacher, held in Turbo, Likuyani sub-county on Saturday.

Mark Tum, the branch vice-chairperson, clarified that the strike is not intended to punish students or parents but is aimed at addressing the government’s failure to honor previous agreements with educators.

“We are striking not to harm students or parents, but because the government has become deceptive and ignorant of its obligations to us as teachers. We feel humiliated and overlooked,” he said.

Tum urged parents to actively support teachers in their fight for better conditions, highlighting the shared responsibility for the welfare of their children.

“We ask that you join us in demonstrations, so the government understands that our demands are urgent and serious. Remember, we are also your children, and we deserve a good life just like anyone else,” he appealed.
