The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has asked Kenya National examination Council (KNEC) to reverse the decision to bar some teachers from marking this year’s KCSE.
Addressing mourners at Mosora Secondary School during the funeral service of the mother of former KUPPET Branch Assistant Secretary Jared Oteyo, Kisii Executive Secretary Joseph Abincha said the cancellation affected innocent teachers who were not implicated in examination irregularities.
Calling the move an infamous step, he asked the CS for education Julius Ogamba to intervene and reinstate the teachers as they left their schools under the principals and their deputies as per the requirements of the examination council, and whatever happened after that was not in their control.
He observed that some of those rejected are experienced markers who have risen to the ranks of team leaders, wondering what might occur in their absence.
He challenged Ogamba to remain true to his promise to punish individuals suspected of examination malpractice and exonerate groups like schools and markers.
On the just ended recruitment of teachers in the country, Abincha decried discrimination and lack of scrutiny of the applicants, singling out qualified married female teachers who were denied a chance in their matrimonial homes and instead referred to their places of birth.
He asked TSC and the Ministry of Education (MoE) to use the chiefs to verify the applicants because majority had marriage certificates, affidavits and letters of identification.
“This situation where female teachers are forced to return to their homes of birth for employment even after they have been married for more than eight years is a mild way of introducing delocalization,” he said, arguing that it will take them back to the same problems they had before, including broken marriages.
