KU VC tenure ends as controversial don proceeds to annual leave

Prof Paul K. Wainaina has proceeded on annual leave and replaced by Prof Waceke Wanjohi.

Kenyatta University Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Paul Wainaina has been handed an annual leave and a new acting VC appointed to take his place, marking the end of a controversial tenure that has been marred by suspensions and reinstatements.

The internal memo dated today, April 15, 2024, notifies the institution of the changes as Prof Wainaina proceeds on leave the same day.

“Following consultations with the University Council, I wish to notify the University that I will be proceeding on annual leave with effect from 15th April, 2024,” reads part of the memo signed by the don himself, further revealing that in his place will be Prof Waceke Wanjohi, who until now has been the Deputy VC (Academic).

There is no hint as to whether Prof Wainaina was duly processed for retirement after finishing his annual leave, but speculations will be rife that he has been forced into retirement having been surrounded by controversy throughout his period at the helm.

Known for daredevil opposition to the government’s excesses, he was once suspended for resisting the carving out of the university land for development purposes.
