The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) now wants the government to apply proper titles to heads of learning institutions as the new curriculum takes root.
KNUT Secretary General (SG) Collins Oyuu said school heads with over 2000 learners should be referred to as principals and not head teachers.
Oyuu similarly said that learning institutions which offer a variety of curricula should be referred to as comprehensive schools.
In a speech read on his behalf by a KNUT trustee Dan Aloo during KEPSHA annual conference in Kisumu, Oyuu said the heads of such institutions should be promoted based on workloads.
He said such head teachers should be elevated to Grade B 5.
The SG also said teachers who have clocked the age of 55 should be promoted automatically.
The same trend, Oyuu said, should be applied to deputy heads who have been acting for a long time.
Oyuu took issue with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) for promoting very few teachers against a huge backlog, whom he noted are yet to be promoted.
Coast Quality Assurance Officer Daniel Mwema urged the head teachers to be prudent managers of finances, asking them to familiarize themselves with various finance Acts and pending bills.
