Busia County Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary Majale Bwire Justine has fully concurred with President William Ruto’s recent directive that reopening of schools across the country be suspended until further notice owing to the flooding menace.
In an interview with Education News at the KNUT offices in Busia town on May 6, Majale stated that though the directive would eventually lead to the delay in the completion of the syllabus and also disrupting the academic programmes, the lives of the learners, teachers, parents and the community is paramount.
He said the Head of State’s directive was timely considering that apart from massive loss of lives as a result of the raging floodwaters, scores of learning institutions across the country have been rendered inaccessible.

“I am supporting the presidential directive until the weather is stable and I want to state that the president is aware of the negative effect of floods within the county and the national level on learners, students, teachers and the learning institutions, said the KNUT county secretary.
The county secretary further said that once learning resumes after the lifting of the presidential directive, the Ministry of Education will have no alternative but to take the initiative and ensure that the academic calendar is adjusted so as to cover the time lost.
“The Ministry of Education will be left with no option but to adjust the academic calendar or else the academic performance would end up being affected,” he added.
On the other hand, a senior teacher and class eight examination officer at Sirimba Mission Primary School in Bunyala Sub-county, Budalangi constituency David Muleke opined that only affected schools could have been closed and the rest of the schools not affected by the floods be allowed to go on with learning as usual.
