KNUT mourns the death of Bomet Chair Joseph Cheruiyot

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) is mourning the death of the Bomet branch chairperson Joseph Cheruiyot who passed on yesterday while undergoing treatment at a Nakuru hospital.

Soon after reports of his demise, villagers and guests arrived at his Kimori home in Konoin to condole with the family.

Teachers described Cheruiyot as visionary, dedicated and a team player.

“We are shocked to learn about the demise of Cheruiyot. JC has been a fierce champion of teachers’ rights. May God give the family strength during this hard time,” said a teacher from Rerendet Primary School in Konoin.

A family member who spoke to the press on condition of anonymity said JC was suffering from cancer and underwent a surgery a week ago.

This comes at a time KNUT has been piling pressure on the government to declare cancer a national disaster.

The union said many people in the country have been diagnosed with the disease and there is an urgent need for action to be taken.

“We have lost an incredible personality in him as he was a source of unity and tranquility at the branch and the union as a whole. To the family, kindly receive our deepest sympathies and love. May his soul rest in peace,” Joseph Malel Lang’at, First Vice National Chairman, said.
