The Teachers Service Commission’s (TSC) delay in releasing dues to the teachers’ unions on time has disrupted the unions’ operations, with many branches struggling to meet their financial obligations.
As of Wednesday this week, daily activities were not as usual at the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) and Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) offices nationwide.
The situation has continued to slow down activities in the unions’ offices, though it is kept secret. Reports from various regions, such as Central, Nyanza, and Rift Valley, indicate that the delay in cash remitting has slowed operations.
Burdened by empty pockets, union workers wonder why the TSC is taking so long to remit the union dues.

Some branch executive secretaries who spoke anonymously in these regions revealed that all was not well. They had bills to pay in addition to meeting office obligations.
“We no longer receive any phone calls. I’m so selective as my suppliers are threatening for breaching contract,” said one of the KNUT officials from Central Kenya.
The silence from both Knut and Puppet national offices enigmatizes the local branches. The situation experienced by the Knut branches is replicated in all the KUPPET branches.
Some union officials believe that the two union national officials fear exerting pressure on the Commission as it can baptize them with failure to deduct union dues from the teachers. Both unions have been victims of this.
As the teaching fraternity celebrates Valentine’s Day across the country, teacher unions discuss how they can send flowers to their loved ones, minus the financial component resulting from dry pockets. They hope that TSC will move with speed with speed to make this month of love alive for union workers.
