The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), Kericho branch has decried the ongoing sale of narcotics and illicit liquor near learning institutions.

Branch Executive Secretary David Bore says the proximity has made it easy for students to access the substance.

Speaking in Kericho town, Bore observed that the substances are packaged like sweets to conceal the substances before being sold to students.

“The consumption of narcotics among students is now high. This is worrying; hence, there is a need for action,” stated Bore.

According to him, the behaviours of students whose schools are near liquor dens have worsened, requiring urgent action by security agencies.

He appealed for a thorough inspection of canteens and shops in and near schools to tackle the vice he termed a threat to education.

These substances are sold in canteens near schools and sometimes even packaged like sweets. This trend poses a huge threat to the education and future of our children,” he said.

He pointed out unrest, indiscipline, and poor performance among students as some of the effects of consuming illicit brews.

Bore rooted for good relations among principals, teachers and students, adding that students can be used to paint schools in a bad light.

“I urge school heads and security personnel to inspect these canteens. School heads should also work closely with teachers and students to ensure the smooth running of education. Outsiders can sometimes use students to paint schools in bad light,” added Bore.

Cases of unrest have been rampant in schools, with pressure also mounting on the government to establish guidance and counselling in the institutions to help tackle the trend.
