The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has reasserted its opposition to the ongoing delocalization of teachers by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

Willy Korir, the secretary for the Trans Mara branch of KNUT, stated that delocalization demoralizes teachers and negatively impacts their performance.

Speaking in Kilgoris town, he condemned the TSC for continuing the programme, which he claimed had been abolished.

“The delocalization policy has been revoked. However, we still see teachers being transferred to counties far from their homes. This is unacceptable,” he said.

Korir also expressed frustration over the delayed promotions of teachers, many of whom have furthered their education. He called for the withdrawal of the “show cause” letters issued to teachers in the area who recently refused to complete appraisal forms.

“Many of our teachers have advanced their careers; some have earned degrees while others possess diplomas. Unfortunately, these teachers have not yet been promoted,” Korir added.

Accompanied by other KNUT officials, Korir criticized the government for excessive borrowing, arguing that this trend has led to higher taxes for Kenyans.

His sentiments were echoed by David Bore, his counterpart from Kipkelion, who warned that industrial action would be considered if the promotions of teachers continue to be delayed.

“Promotion is a right, not a favor. As a union, we may resort to industrial action if teachers are not urgently promoted,” Bore asserted.
