KNUT challenges KNEC to pay contracted staff well and promptly

Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has called on the country’s examination body the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) to pay all its contracted professionals, teachers included, their remuneration immediately they complete the exam exercise and also review upwards their package.

The union’s first National Vice Chairman Malel Lang’at, who spoke to Education News yesterday after gracing KNUT Thika Branch Annual General Meeting (AGM) and by-election, decried the delayed payment of centre managers, invigilators, supervisors, markers and security personnel as demoralizing.

“The payment to KNEC contracted officials is little and usually delays; it’s high time KNEC reviewed the pay and also pay it immediately,” said Lang’at.

He also asked the National Treasury to disburse capitation to schools in the standard ratios of 50:30:20 so that head teachers and principals can adequately prepare for Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary School Examination (KCSE), which are both expected to start next month.

Lang’at oversees the by-election at the branch.

At the same time he also urged the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government to ensure the troubled areas of Boni Forest and bandit prone areas of Rift Valley and North Eastern are adequately secured for the exam period.
