The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) is now demanding the posting of additional teachers to special schools across the country.

Koibatek/Mogotio Branch KNUT Executive Secretary Francis Bundotich revealed that the schools grapple with understaffing whereas the enrolment of students keeps increasing.

Speaking recently, he observed that there are thousands of trained special education teachers, some of whom have remained jobless for years.

“Special schools in the country have been neglected for long. These schools grapple with understaffing and we want to ask TSC to post teachers to these schools,” he said.

According to him, the institutions have been neglected over the years, a trend he described as a gross violation of the rights of special needs learners.

Bundotich also decried the poor infrastructure at the institutions, further urging both levels of government to urgently address the problem.

“Most special schools lack the necessary infrastructure for learners. This has greatly inconvenienced the learners and made it difficult for them to go about their day to day activities. As a result, we want to ask both levels of government to urgently address this problem,” added Bundotich.

A spot-check conducted at special schools in the Rift valley region established that some of the schools have a learners’ population of over 400 with less than 10 teachers.
