KNUT advises TSC to prioritize fairness and transparency in current recruitment of teachers

KNUT Kitui County Executive Secretary Simon Mutunga Nding'o speaking during a past function

The Secretary General of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Kitui branch, Simon Mutunga Ndingo, has called on the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to ensure fairness and transparency in the ongoing teacher recruitment process in the whole country.

In a press statement, Ndingo highlighted instances where trained teachers who are married and reside in various sub-counties have been excluded from filling out employment forms despite meeting all necessary qualifications.

He pointed out that some of these teachers have been denied opportunities simply because they were not born in the sub-counties where their spouses live. Ndingo emphasised that married female teachers should be allowed to apply for jobs in the sub-counties where they are married.

He contrasted this situation with neighbouring counties like Machakos and Makueni, where married women from different regions can apply for teaching positions once they present their marriage certificates and affidavits.

However, he alleged that discriminatory practices in Kitui County have prevented similar considerations for married teachers. Ndingo urged the Director of TSC to intervene and end what he described as blatant discrimination in the hiring process.

The recruitment exercise for primary school teachers in Kitui County is set to begin tomorrow, and Ndingo has urged TSC to ensure that all qualified candidates receive equal opportunities, regardless of their place of birth.

Efforts to obtain a response from the TSC regarding these claims were unsuccessful.
